The number of new CoV infections in Poland has reached a new high. Within 24 hours, 36,665 new cases were added, the Ministry of Health announced today. This is the highest figure since the pandemic began. Poland has a population of about 38 million.
About 30 percent of the new infections were due to the Omikron variant, Deputy Health Minister Waldemar Kraska told Radio Plus. Omicron is expected to become the dominant variant in the coming days, he said.
Last week, a dispute over CoV policy led to a clash in Poland’s government medical advisory body. In protest against the increasing influence of vaccination opponents, 13 of 17 members had left the Medical Council.
The opposition has long accused the national conservative PiS government of avoiding drastic measures in the face of a comparatively low vaccination rate so as not to alienate vaccination opponents in its own ranks.
For example, there is still no legal basis for operators of restaurants, hotels and stores to ask about the vaccination status of their customers. Rules such as 2-G or 3-G do not exist in Poland.
